threats to culture
Tourism is the number one threat to the Amish culture. It affects the Amish religion especially in the larger communities. A main part of the Amish belief system is to be separated from the rest of the world. By appealing to and selling to tourists they no longer remain separate. The more time they focus on "the outside world" the less time they have with God.
The next biggest threat is the use of technology and is highly avoided by the Amish because it is a prime connection to the outside world. Modern technology can lead to temptations which would threaten the community and the family life. There are exceptions to this ban such as, adding electric flashers to their buggies because there are legal requirements to driving on public roads. Certain types of farm equipment are acceptable such as milking equipment and electric fences to contain cattle.
The video below shows an Amish family that goes about their normal routine day filled with doing chores. Within the video they state how they believe the Amish culture has changed and if it will last.
